The system will monitor space weather and the ionosphere
Flight tests of the Ionosfera-M satellites No. 1 and No. 2, which are part of the new Ionozond space system, have been completed in Russia. The state commission has recognized the tests as successful and recommended the system for commissioning, the Roscosmos state corporation reported.
The devices were developed by the VNIIEM corporation, which is part of the Roscosmos state corporation. The ground complex for receiving and processing data was created by the Planeta scientific center of Roshydromet.
The space system is designed to monitor the state of near-Earth space, or so-called “space weather.” It can be used to observe changes in the ionosphere, an important layer of the atmosphere that affects the propagation of radio waves.
The satellites will collect data on the interaction of the ionosphere with the lower layers of the atmosphere, which will help in constructing a three-dimensional model of this layer and improve forecasts of conditions for radio communications.
The orbital group currently includes two satellites, launched in November 2024.
