More US Users Can Now Access Google Photos’ “Ask Photos” Search Functionality

Google has introduced a series of improvements to its Gemini-powered “Ask Photos” feature in Google Photos. Initially launched last year as an early access tool, the feature was praised for handling complex search queries , such as suggesting photos for phone backgrounds or recalling meals from a trip to Barcelona.

However, it struggled with simple keyword searches like “dog” or “beach,” which often led to subpar results and user complaints.

Improving Performance on Simple Searches

To address this issue, Google has now integrated elements of the classic Google Photos search system into “Ask Photos.” This hybrid approach allows the app to handle shorter, more direct queries using the traditional search engine, while longer, conversational questions are processed by the Gemini AI model for deeper, contextual understanding.

This change significantly improves response speed and accuracy, making the feature more practical for everyday use.

Rolling Out to More US Users

With these enhancements in place, Google is now expanding the availability of “Ask Photos” beyond the early access group to more eligible users across the United States .

To qualify for the feature, you must:

  • Be 18 years old or older
  • Be located in the United States
  • Have your Google Account language set to English (United States)
  • Have Face Groups enabled in Google Photos

How to Access Ask Photos

The updated feature is currently available on Android and iOS devices. Here’s how to try it:

  1. Open the Google Photos app
  2. Tap Ask at the bottom of the screen
  3. Press Try now and accept the terms

If you don’t see the Ask button, it means the feature hasn’t rolled out to your account yet.

It’s also worth noting that the feature is not yet available on desktop , but future updates may bring support for computers.

What’s Next? Global Expansion Expected

While the feature is currently limited to users in the US, many expect Google to expand it internationally in the coming months, giving users around the world a chance to experience the power of AI-driven photo search.
