Google’s AI Overview Now Acknowledges 2025 After Early Confusion
Last year, Google introduced AI Overview , a feature designed to help users save time by offering AI-generated summaries for search queries. Just twelve months later, the company rolled out AI Mode , an expanded version of the feature aimed at handling more complex questions that require deeper reasoning.
Despite these advancements, the AI-powered tool has faced several hiccups — even when answering simple, factual questions. Recently, many users on X noticed that when asking Google, “Is it 2025?” , the AI Overview replied: “No, it’s not 2025. The current year is 2024, according to a calendar.”
The response sparked confusion and online jokes, highlighting ongoing challenges with AI accuracy in basic real-world knowledge.
Interestingly, a Reddit user discovered that adding an expletive to the end of the question — “Is it 2025?” — was enough to get the AI Overview to return the correct answer. The workaround quickly went viral, sparking both amusement and concern over how AI systems interpret language.
Luckily, Google appears to have resolved the issue, and the AI Overview now correctly recognizes that we’re in 2025 . While the company hasn’t officially explained what caused the confusion, a spokesperson told TechCrunch that cases like this are used to improve the system and prevent similar errors in the future.
