Google Enhances NotebookLM for Smarter, More Flexible Research

At I/O 2025, Google introduced a new AI-powered feature for NotebookLM — its research and note-taking tool — called Video Overviews. As the name suggests, this feature enhances AI-generated summaries with visual elements.

In short, NotebookLM’s Video Overviews feature can now turn your uploaded files and images into video summaries or even educational clips. Google used this feature internally to create highlight videos for the I/O 2025 consumer and developer keynotes — each running around 9 minutes.

These videos offer AI-generated summaries much like the existing Audio Overviews, where realistic voiceovers walk you through the event’s biggest announcements. But now, they come with added visuals — including graphics, charts, and images — making the summaries more engaging and easier to follow.

Google also showcased the Video Overviews feature by generating a one-minute summary of a virtual field trip to a national park in California. Additionally, the company created a dedicated NotebookLM notebook focused on Google I/O 2025 , packed with YouTube videos of keynotes and product demos, blog posts, and official press releases.

With this notebook, users can explore I/O announcements through different formats: visualize them in a mind map, read a written briefing, or listen to an AI-generated audio summary. Google confirmed that Video Overviews will soon be available to all users — starting with English support.

In another update, NotebookLM now lets you adjust the length of Audio Overviews .

NotebookLM has come a long way since its initial reveal two years ago under the name Project Tailwind . Designed as a research and analysis tool, it pulls insights from various sources — including documents, YouTube videos, audio files, URLs, and more — while relying mostly on provided data, which helps reduce the risk of AI hallucinations.

Still, Google advises users to remain cautious when interpreting results. Originally launched for desktop, the tool is now available on both Android and iOS .

Other recent additions include web search capabilities and expanded language support for Audio Overviews to over 50 languages. And while NotebookLM is a powerful tool, some users have found creative (and sometimes funny) ways to test its limits — even trying to push its AI hosts into existential conversations.
