Gemini Brings AI-Powered Chart Creation to Google Sheets

Google introduced an AI-powered feature in Google Sheets that allowed users to ask Gemini to generate charts from their data. While the idea was promising, the initial version had a major drawback: the generated charts were static images , not interactive or editable — and they wouldn’t update if the underlying data changed.

Now, Google has improved the experience significantly. Users can now create fully editable charts using Gemini, and these charts will also update automatically when the data changes.

📊 How It Works

The process is simple and intuitive. By opening the Gemini side panel , you can type a request like:

“Create a bar chart showing campaign performance by market.”

Gemini processes your request and generates the chart. When inserted into the spreadsheet, the chart appears in a new tab dedicated to its data source. From there, you can fully customize it — changing titles, colors, labels, axes, and more — just like any regular Google Sheets chart.

⚠️ Some Limitations Still Apply

While this is a big step forward, the system isn’t perfect yet. One notable quirk is that the editable chart is linked to the new tab , not the original data source. That means if your main dataset changes, you have to manually update the data in the chart’s own tab for it to reflect the latest figures — which is a bit different from how standard Sheets charts work.

Additionally, for more complex chart types, Gemini may still fall back to generating static image charts , so results can vary depending on what you’re trying to visualize.

🚀 Availability and Account Requirements

The updated feature began rolling out recently and should reach all eligible users within one to three days .

It’s currently available to users with the following plans:

  • Google Workspace Business Standard
  • Business Plus
  • Enterprise Standard
  • Enterprise Plus

Also included are subscribers of the rebranded Google AI Pro and Ultra plans (formerly known as Google One AI Premium).

Users who are still on the older Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons (which Google stopped selling on January 15, 2025) can also access the feature — provided their admin has enabled the “Smart features and personalization” setting.
