Galaxy Watch Models That Will Stop Receiving Security Patches in 2025
Samsung has officially confirmed that support for its Tizen-powered smartwatches will come to a complete end in September 2025 , marking the final chapter in a years-long transition away from its own operating system toward Wear OS by Google .
This decision reflects Samsung’s broader strategy to align its wearable ecosystem with Google’s platform, a shift that began back in 2021 when the company announced a long-term partnership to integrate Wear OS more deeply into its Galaxy Watch lineup.
📅 The Timeline of Tizen’s Gradual Phase-Out
The process of phasing out Tizen services started on September 30, 2024 , when the Galaxy Store stopped selling paid content for Tizen-based devices. That was followed by the cutoff of new downloads for free content on May 31, 2025 .
Finally, as of September 30, 2025 , users will no longer be able to re-download any previously purchased apps or content from the Galaxy Store for their Tizen watches.
In an official notice titled “Tizen Watch Service Termination Schedule,” Samsung outlined the timeline clearly:
“We inform you that we will be discontinuing Tizen Watch service on Galaxy Store. The termination of Tizen Watch service will proceed according to the schedule below; after September 30th, 2025, Tizen Watch service will be completely suspended.”
⏳ Key Milestones:
- September 30, 2024 : Paid content sales and new downloads for Tizen watches ended.
- November 30, 2024 : Final settlement for previously sold paid content.
- May 31, 2025 : New downloads of free content were disabled.
- September 30, 2025 : Re-downloads of previously purchased content will be suspended, and full Tizen Watch service will terminate.
🕐 Which Devices Will Be Affected?
While Samsung hasn’t released an official list of affected models, based on past updates and device compatibility, the following Galaxy Watches and Gear devices are expected to lose all Tizen support:
⌚ Galaxy Gear Series
- Samsung Galaxy Gear (Original)
- Samsung Galaxy Gear 2
- Samsung Galaxy Gear S2
- Samsung Gear S3 Classic
- Samsung Gear S3 Frontier
⌚ Galaxy Watch Series (Tizen-Based Models)
- Samsung Galaxy Watch (First Gen / Galaxy Watch 1)
- Samsung Galaxy Watch Active
- Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 3
Devices launched after the Galaxy Watch 3 , such as the Galaxy Watch4 series and newer , run on Wear OS and are not affected by this change.
📺 What About Tizen on Samsung TVs?
Interestingly, while Samsung is ending Tizen support for wearables, it continues to rely on the operating system for another major product line: Samsung TVs . These continue to use Tizen OS , and the company even promises up to seven years of software support for select models — showing that while Tizen is being phased out for smartwatches, it still plays a key role in Samsung’s larger ecosystem.
🔄 Looking Ahead
With this final deadline approaching, owners of older Tizen-based Galaxy Watches should consider what steps they may want to take — whether backing up app data, switching to a newer model, or preparing for a device that will no longer receive software support.
Samsung’s move signals a clear focus on Wear OS going forward, which could bring better integration across Android devices and improved long-term support for future Galaxy Watch models.
