Amazon Zoox Recalls Software After Self Driving Taxi Crash

In Las Vegas

Amazon-owned Zoox has recalled the software for all 270 of its self-driving taxis after an April 8 crash in Las Vegas. The crash involved an autonomous vehicle without a driver. No one was hurt and the damage was minor.

The accident occurred when a passenger car began to veer off a perpendicular road and stopped, the company said. The Zoox drone was traveling at more than 40 mph (64 km/h), slowed down, and attempted to pass the car on the right, but the collision still occurred. The system mistakenly assumed the car would continue moving and made the decision that led to the accident.

The software update should fix this bug, improving the car’s behavior in such situations. Earlier, in March, Zoox already fixed an issue with sudden braking, which caused collisions with motorcycles.
