AI Reshapes Amazon’s Workforce: Another Round of Layoffs Expected

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has openly acknowledged that artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing how the company operates — and with it, the future of employment at the tech giant. In a recent interview with CNBC, Jassy made it clear that as AI becomes more central to daily tasks, fewer human workers will be needed to perform them.

He described AI as “the most transformative technology of our lifetime,” but warned that this progress comes with consequences for traditional roles across departments.

 

🔹 Fewer Jobs, More Automation

Jassy explained that AI’s growing capabilities are reducing the need for manual and repetitive labor. “Like every major technological shift, there will be jobs that no longer require as many people — or even any people — because they’ll be handled by machines,” he said.

This shift is already visible in Amazon’s warehouses, customer service centers, and corporate offices, where AI-powered systems are taking over tasks like inventory management, order processing, and data analysis.

 

🔹 New Roles in AI and Robotics

While some jobs are being phased out, Amazon is also creating new opportunities in fields like AI development, robotics, and advanced engineering . According to LinkedIn data, the company has posted over 500 job listings in the last month alone that include “robotics” in the title.

This suggests a strategic move toward hiring more technical talent to support its expanding automation initiatives.

 

🔹 AI Empowers Employees — But Also Replaces Them

One of the key messages from Jassy is that AI isn’t just replacing workers; it’s also empowering them. He believes that intelligent systems can eliminate tedious, repetitive tasks, allowing employees to focus on more meaningful and complex responsibilities.

“Every single person gets to begin each task at a more advanced starting point,” he said, highlighting how AI tools can enhance productivity and decision-making.

 

🔹 Ongoing Layoffs and Corporate Restructuring

Amazon began laying off employees back in 2022 as part of broader post-pandemic cost-cutting measures. However, the rapid integration of AI has only accelerated these changes.

In a memo to employees dated June 17, Jassy confirmed that Amazon plans to reduce its corporate workforce over the next few years due to increased efficiency driven by AI technologies.

To date, the company has reportedly cut around 28,000 positions since early 2022.

Even as jobs are eliminated, Amazon continues to invest heavily in AI. Last month, the company announced plans to spend at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania to build cutting-edge AI data centers and infrastructure.
