50 Million Developers and Counting: Visual Studio Reaches Major Milestone
Microsoft has announced a major milestone for its development tools: Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code now serve over 50 million monthly active developers combined.
This achievement reflects the growing adoption of both platforms — Visual Studio , the feature-rich IDE that’s long been a staple for Windows developers, and Visual Studio Code , the lightweight, open-source code editor that has become a favorite across web, cloud, and AI development workflows.
Visual Studio, first released nearly three decades ago, continues to evolve with support for cross-platform apps, game development, data science, and more. Meanwhile, Visual Studio Code’s modular design and rich extension ecosystem have made it one of the most popular editors in the world.
To mark the milestone, Microsoft released special anniversary wallpapers and teased upcoming updates set to debut at its Build developer conference , including new features aimed at enhancing the developer experience — especially in the age of AI-assisted coding.
Amanda Silver, CVP of Microsoft’s Developer Division, noted that the company is just beginning to explore how AI will reshape software development, calling this milestone “the start of a new era.”
